Back in 2014, when I planned a trip to Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh, most people asked, “Where is that?” It was a place not many had heard of. Pristine, serene, and untouched by commercialism. There were only two options for stay, and that simplicity was part of its charm. Fast forward to today: Mechuka is on every traveler’s radar. A quick Google search will show you countless guesthouses and homestays. While this growth is wonderful for local communities and economies, I often find myself asking: when does tourism become overtourism? Anything in excess harms what we love. We talk about balanced tourism as the solution but honestly, even I’m still figuring out what that truly means. Maybe it starts with awareness, with asking the right questions, and with each of us taking responsibility for how we travel. As travel professionals, we have a role to play in shaping this narrative. Can we promote destinations without overwhelming them? Can we encourage travelers to leave a lighter footprint? Balanced tourism should be the mantra for every destination especially for gems like Mechuka so their soul isn’t lost to the crowd.
